Meet Your Amazing Brain

July 25, 2026 · 10–11 AM
Free workshop for grades 5–8 · Cambrian Library, San Jose

This introductory neuroscience workshop explored one central question: How does the brain control the body?

What we covered

  • What neuroscience studies: the brain, spinal cord, and nerves, and how they support thinking, feeling, learning, remembering, and movement.

  • Brain facts and myths: a fact-or-fiction activity about neuroplasticity, neurons, sleep, memory, and common misconceptions such as using only 10% of the brain.

  • The nervous system: the roles of the central and peripheral nervous systems, with a sorting activity identifying the brain, spinal cord, and nerves.

  • Messages between brain and body: discussion of how signals travel when we move or respond to something hot.

  • Optical illusions: the Kanizsa triangle, Rubin vase, and checker-shadow illusion as examples of how the brain interprets visual information.

Participants also explored a foam brain model together.
